ESTECH: Main sponsor of the ETH focus project "IRIDE"

Building a hybrid rocket engine

ESTECH Industries is the main sponsor of the ETH Zurich focus project "IRIDE". Support is provided by FAES-PWR ESTECH AG through the manufacture of highly sophisticated key components.

FAES-PWR ESTECH AG specializes in the manufacture of precision components for use in aerospace, laboratory technology, automation or precision instruments, among others. The core know-how lies in the CNC 5-axis machining of individual and series parts, primarily in high-precision cubic and rotary machining, in the tolerance range up to +/-3 μm, in aluminium, titanium, steel and special alloys as well as cast and forged parts. The multi-axis machining technology is complemented by erosion processes, grinding technologies, laser marking and an express workshop. The EN 9100-2016 standard allows to serve the entire spectrum of the Aviation & Space industry.

Project IRIDE

On 16 September 2019, the first ETH focus project organised by ARIS was launched. IRIDE is the follow-up project of the RHEA project. It consists of 8 Bachelor students in the field of mechanical engineering.

The aim is to build a second-generation hybrid rocket engine, capable of delivering 5 kN of thrust to power a sounding rocket. The engine is named IRIDE (ì-ri-de), Italian for iris, the colored part of the eye. The name is related to the Greek goddess Iris, the messenger and patron saint of the rainbow, the sea and the sky. She is often depicted as a flying hybrid being, exactly what we want to achieve with our engine.
